Irish in China Latest: Pat McCarthy Addresses Dalian University

On January 12, 2025, Professor Pat McCarthy, Chairman of the Ireland Sino Institute, delivered a compelling address at Dalian University of Foreign Languages, a prestigious institution ranked among the top 1% globally. His speech underscored the enduring partnership between Ireland and China, highlighting the significant contributions of the Irish community within China. The event was graced by high-level officials from the China Central Government and the Liaoning Provincial Government, underscoring the significance of the occasion.

Strengthening Ireland - China Relations

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1979, Ireland and China have cultivated a vibrant and constructive partnership, informed by shared values and mutual respect. This relationship has facilitated substantial growth in  foreign direct investment, trade, education, and cultural exchanges.

By 2024, cumulative Chinese investment into Ireland stood at €9.2 billion. There were 40 Chinese companies operating in Ireland, collectively employing approximately 5,000 Irish people. In contrast, Ireland’s estimated FDI into China is approximately €3.35 billion. According to a recent interview with the former Ambassador of Ireland to China, Ann Derwin, there were 100 Irish-invested companies operating in China, collectively employing approximately 5,000 Chinese people.

The Ireland Sino Institute's Impact on ireland-China Relations

In his address, Professor McCarthy highlighted the Ireland Sino Institute’s instrumental role in strengthening Ireland-China relations. He emphasized the Institute’s non-profit initiatives in rural Liaoning, which have provided education to 20,000 Chinese students, exemplifying Ireland’s commitment to China’s educational development. Additionally, he discussed the Institute’s efforts to connect Ireland and China through various initiatives in culture, tourism, and business.

Looking Ahead: The Europe China Centre

Building on this foundation, Professor McCarthy announced the forthcoming establishment of the Europe China Centre, headquartered in Beijing with branch offices in Liaoning. This initiative aims to further enhance collaboration between Europe and China, fostering deeper understanding and cooperation across various sectors.

Professor Pat McCarthy and the Ireland Sino Institute have a distinguished history of engaging in high-level events that bolster Ireland-China relations. Notably, in 2023, Professor McCarthy held discussions with Micheál Martin, the current Prime Minister of Ireland, at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai during Martin’s visit to China, exploring avenues to enhance bilateral cooperation. 

Additionally, in 2018, the Institute’s significant contributions were recognized during an interview with the China State Council, underscoring the organization’s role in fostering mutual understanding and collaboration between the two nations.

Addressing the graduates of Dalian University, Professor McCarthy emphasized the importance of ambition and impact. He encouraged them to “Think Big, Do Big, and Make a Difference,” reflecting the dynamic spirit that drives the Irish community in China. Professor McCarthy’s address at Dalian University underscores the profound and growing relationship between Ireland and China. Through educational initiatives and cultural exchange, the Irish community continues to play a pivotal role in China’s development, embodying the enduring friendship between the two nations.
